A ?carcineretid crab from Lower Turonian (Cretaceous) black shales of Misburg, Hannover area (Germany) Naturalis
Neumann, Christian; Jagt, John W.M..
Although poorly preserved and missing most, if not all, carapace features that would allow for a proper assignment at the generic level, we think a crab (Fig. 1) contained in the collections of the late Professor Gundolf Ernst warrants a short description, if only in view of its preservational style.

A Century of Synthetic Fertilizer: 1909-2009 Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
This year marks a centenary of the synthetic fertilizer industry. German chemists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, in 1909 demonstrated their industrial process for the manufacture of ammonia. The achievement won them accolades including Nobel Prizes. The output of their Haber-Bosch process can be used for either peace or war, agriculture or munitions, and the rapid adoption by Germany of this industrial process is credited with prolonging WW1. Most of the synthetic nitrogenous fertilizer of the past century, and right up to the present, has been manufactured using the Haber-Bosch process. The use of synthetic fertilizers has led to significant negative environmental outcomes. Rudolf Steiner was an early voice against chemical agriculture. Steiner's...

Agrarpolitische Interessen Frankreichs und Deutschlands – Gemeinsamkeiten und Divergenzen unter sich ändernden Rahmenbedingungen AgEcon
Ahrens, Heinz; Lippert, Christian.
The aim of this contribution is to examine how the French and the German positions on agricultural policy have developed since the foundation of the EEC and what the driving forces were behind. The “general consensus” underlying the EEC treaty, and according to which the common market would be “conquered” by France in the case of the classical agricultural products, could not be translated into practice; for what emerged for these products was not a customs union but a “price support union”. As a consequence French intra-community agricultural exports had to be redirected to the world market. Thus initial positive French income transfers via intracommunity trade were transformed into transfers from the EC budget, an evolution that can be interpreted as a...

Agri-Environmental Policy: Understanding the Role of Regional Administration AgEcon
Eggers, Jorg; Laschewski, Lutz; Schleyer, Christian.
With regard to agri-environmental schemes (AES) under Regulation (EC) 1257/99, we suggest that their ineffectiveness, inefficiency, and divers uptake is inherent to the way they are institutionalised in the European CAP framework. Based on experiences of the GRANO research project that initiated two Agri-Environmental Forums in Brandenburg (Germany) to integrate local actors directly into designing and implementing local AES we argue that the process of designing AES can be conceptualised as a complex negotiation process at Laender level. The related institutional settings shape possible outcomes and scheme designs. With only "passive support" for decentralised and participatory approaches yet compulsory complex bureaucratic procedures on part of the EU,...

Alcohols as a Means to Inhibit the Formation of Precipitates in Blends of Biodiesel and Fossil Diesel Fuel CIGR Journal
Munack, Axel; Schmidt, Lasse; Schröder, Olaf; Schaper, Kevin; Pabst, Christoph; Krahl, Jürgen; ,.
The European diesel fuel specification limits the biodiesel content to 7 %. It is, however, desirable to increase the amount of renewables in the transport sector; therefore blending with a higher biogenic fuel content is of interest. Blending of fuels can lead to chemical reactions between fuel components and may result in undesired products. In detail, aged biodiesel from unsaturated FAME and fossil diesel fuels can form oligomers and precipitations with a maximum in the range of B10 to B20. Precursors are oligomers that can be separated from the biodiesel or the blends in an amount of up to 20 %. These oligomers seem to have potency for chemical reactions with fuel components or the engine oil. To prevent tentative problems in the fuel filter, the...

AN ANALYSIS OF THE RETIREMENT-CONSUMPTION PUZZLE FOR FOOD-AT-HOME AND AWAY-FROM-HOME EXPENDITURES IN GERMANY AgEcon
Drescher, Larissa S.; Roosen, Jutta.
According to Ando and Modigliani (1957), consumers pass different stages of a lifecycle with different impact on demand. The criticism that the life-cycle theory neglects generational effects and concentrates on ageing effects only has led to the application of the cohort analysis which decomposes not only age, but also period and cohort effects. Following these ideas, this paper presents results of a cohort analysis on food-at-home and away-from-home consumption covering 25 years of German consumption data. Special attention is given to the retirement-consumption puzzle which is the unanticipated drop in consumption after retirement. Results of seemingly unrelated regressions indicate that there are significant age, period and cohort effects of...

An empirical investigation of the demand for bananas in Germany AgEcon
Burrell, Alison M.; Henningsen, Arne.
We use econometric methods to investigate consumer demand for bananas and for other fruit in Germany. Monthly household survey data for the period 1986-1998 are analysed. Demand for bananas is significantly responsive to own price, suggesting that policy-induced price increases generate the usual dead-weight losses. Demand is also responsive to income changes, indicating that there is scope for further market expansion as incomes grow. There is evidence that other categories of fruit are both gross and net substitutes for bananas.

Auction Experiments and Simulations of Milk Quota Exchanges AgEcon
Brümmer, Bernhard; Loy, Jens-Peter; Requate, Till.
Since 2000 Germany has a fairly unique market mechanism to trade milk quotas between dairy farms. The two major features are: (1) a quasi auctioning system that produces excess demands which are covered by state reserves free of charge and (2) a price band is used to exclude high price bids. For both features an experimental design is developed to study their impact in comparison to a regular seller’s sealed bid double auction. Results show that both treatments lead to significant misallocations. These are due the direct impact of regulations and due to an imperfect adjustment of bidding functions towards them. The major goal of the market design to reduce quota prices is reached, however, at significant trade losses.

Ausweitung des ökologischen Landbaus in Deutschland – Voraussetzungen, Strategien, Implikationen, politische Optionen Organic Eprints
Kuhnert, H.; Feindt, P.; Beusmann, V..
The main aim of the study was to develop political strategies and measures to support the extension of organic farming in Germany. The work followed a multi-method approach framed by Social Marketing theory. Asking for hindrances, proposals for action and the perception of organic farming and organic food a literature and a discourse analysis, focus groups with consumers and farmers as well as interviews with actors of the value creation chain were done. Based on the results of the different analyses and the already existing policies nine strategies for the extension of organic farming were formulated and checked by a number of criteria. As a central result it turned out that no significant contribution to the extension of organic farming can be achieved...

Biodynamic agriculture shows steady global growth Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
New figures released by Demeter-International reveal the steady global growth of biodynamic agriculture. Certified biodynamic hectares are up 2% (from 144,497 to 147,495 hectares), biodynamic processors are up 5% (from 456 to 478), and biodynamic distributors are up 3% (from 185 to 190). The number of countries with Demeter-International certified biodynamic activity increased from 48 to 52. Croatia and Peru enter the list with newly reported biodynamic farms, and Bulgaria and Ukraine enter the list with new biodynamic distributors. There is considerable volatility in the statistics, with most countries reporting changes in the statistics for 2012 compared to the previous year. The three leading countries, based on biodynamic hectares, are Germany (with...

Brachiopoden Naturalis
Winkler Prins, C.P.; Amler, M.R.W..
A tabular review of the Lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) brachiopods from Germany is given combined with data on their stratigraphic and palaeogeographic distribution. A complete revision proved impossible since too many groups are in need of an extensive reassessment, and many species are poorly known due to their inadequate preservation. Many species are accompanied by comments on their taxonomic status as an explanation of the current state of knowledge.

Breslau (Wrocław): In the footsteps of Rudolf Steiner Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Rudolf Steiner wrote that “The nearness of the Koberwitz estate to Breslau made it possible to unite the agricultural course with other anthroposophical work”. Each day, after the Agriculture Course was presented at the Koberwitz chateau of Count Keyserlingk, Steiner commuted to Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) and back. Most attendees of the Agriculture Course stayed at Breslau and commuted daily in the opposite direction. Steiner’s evening karma lectures were delivered in the lecture hall on the top floor of the Viktoria School (now Liceum Ogólnokształçace Nr 1). Wrocław is now a vibrant, prosperous, Polish city, having been forfeited by Germany following WWII. Wrocław is the European Capital of Culture (Europejska stolica kultury) for 2016.

Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, a new North American invader already widespread on northern red oaks (Quercus rubra) in Western Europe (Bucculatricidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Doorenweerd, C.; Ellis, W.N.; Huisman, K.J.; Koster, J.C.; Mey, W.; Muus, T.S.T.; Schreurs, A..
Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, 1905 is for the first time reported from Europe: the Netherlands, Belgium, and adjacent Germany. DNA barcodes confirm its identity. It is the first North American lepidopteranspecies feeding on northern red oak Quercus rubra ever found in Europe, and only the second North American oak-feeding insect found in Europe. The species has regularly been found in the Netherlands and northern Belgium since 2006, and in 2011 also in Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, adjacent to the Dutch border, but the earliest records are from the Netherlands, Amersfoort in 1989 and 1990. Early stages, leafmines, and the adult are described, illustrated, and diagnosed against oak-feeding Bucculatrix ulmella Zeller, 1848 and other similar species....

Changes in the wine chain - Managerial challenges and threats for German wine co-ops AgEcon
Hanf, Jon Henrich; Schweickert, Erik.
Wine production in Germany has a tradition of more than 200 years in each of the 13 German quality wine-growing regions. Even today mall grape growers dominate the industry. As a result, most of the viticulturists are members of cooperatives. Our observation that grape growers still turn to wine co-ops, and hence, the increase in co-op members and vineyards, might indicate that the wine co-ops are successful. Thus, the aim of our paper is two-fold. First, we analyze the structure of this complex sector and the managerial construct strategic member groups. Second, we empirically test whether the formation of strategic groups is a driver of cooperative success.

Community financing in the German organic food sector: a key for sustainable food systems? Organic Eprints
Behrendt, Gerlinde; Peter, Sarah; Sterly, Simone; Häring, Anna Maria.
The rise of socially responsible and impact investing funds provides evidence for an increased interest private investors have in combining their financial and ethical concerns. At the same time, citizens increasingly engage in food networks and take on a vital role in the governance of agri-food systems. These developments might benefit farms and firms which are committed to sustainable food and seek funding. Through different community financing models, they can involve citizens who aim to support the development of a more sustainable food system. This contribution presents case study evidence on community financing in the German organic food sector and discusses the role it can play in food system transformation.

Community financing in the German organic food sector – an alternative to traditional credit financing? Organic Eprints
Behrendt, Gerlinde; Peter, Sarah; Sterly, Simone; Häring, Anna Maria.
Farms and firms along the value chain for organic food in Germany increasingly complement or substitute traditional credit financing with financing models which base upon citizen participation. However, research on the role of consumers or citizens as investors is quite limited. This contribution presents first insights from a research project on community financing models in the German organic food sector.
